Parents and Members of the Asheville High School
Band,
.......What
will band do for me? It will teach accountability,
self-discipline, self-motivation and taking responsibility
for one's life, respect for others as well as pride in self
and the collective unit. It will develop self-expression,
cooperation, as well as enhance communication skills both
verbal and written. Music and art are truly universal
languages. It will also teach intellectual independence;
how to think, not what to think—how to learn, not
what to learn. It will teach personal expression,
interpretive, listening, performing, and writing skills.
Music is artistic, scientific, mathematical and historical.
Band will develop purpose, form, structure and continuity.
No other subject demands that a student coordinate and
implement as many fundamentals at the same time. It is a
true mental discipline! When one begins to ponder the
enduring values, band is not a frill, it is a necessity.
Long after the horn is put in the closet, what was learned
will last a life time...
